Stradun (Placa) Guide
Stradun: Dubrovnik's Beating Heart Guide
Welcome to the Stradun, also known as the Placa, the main thoroughfare of Dubrovnik's Old Town! This pedestrian-only street is the vibrant heart of the city, a gleaming expanse of limestone pavement that stretches from the Pile Gate to the Luža Square. Imagine yourself strolling along this historic pathway, surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings, the sounds of laughter and conversation, and the tantalizing aromas of local cuisine. The Stradun is more than just a street; it's an experience, a journey through the soul of Dubrovnik. The Stradun's history is deeply intertwined with the city's resilience. Originally a sea channel separating the mainland settlement from the island of Dubrava, it was filled in during the 12th century, creating the unified city we see today. After the devastating earthquake of 1667, the Stradun was rebuilt in a uniform Baroque style, giving it the elegant and harmonious appearance it retains to this day. Walking along the Stradun is like stepping back in time, feeling the echoes of centuries past beneath your feet. The Stradun is a hub of activity. You can start your Dubrovnik adventure at the Pile Gate, the main entrance to the Old Town, and simply wander down the Stradun, soaking in the atmosphere. Stop for a coffee at one of the many cafes lining the street, browse the shops selling local crafts and souvenirs, or admire the iconic landmarks like the Onofrio Fountain and the Rector's Palace that branch off from it. For a taste of Dubrovnik, try *rozata*, a local custard dessert, or *arancini*, candied orange peel, available at many bakeries and cafes along the Stradun. Don't forget to take plenty of photos! The polished limestone practically glows in the sunlight, creating stunning visuals.
